MTA Subway Map Retro Shorts
Chalk Line is celebrating the MTA with the MTA Subway Map Retro Shorts!
The current New York City Subway map design was first published in 1979, but an official map for all subway lines was first created in 1940 after three separate companies merged under a single operator. The New York City Subway map is unique among public transportation maps in that it shows aboveground features like streets and parks among curved subway lines.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has kept New Yorkers moving since 1965. It is the largest public transit authority in North America, carrying over 11 million passengers on an average weekday. According to the MTA, it comprises the nation's largest bus fleet and more subway and commuter rail cars than all other U.S. transit systems combined.
